Delivers despite my skepticism
I never got the hype. Nothing I saw about Avatar prior to its release piqued my interest. Sure, its James Cameron and he hasn't made a movie in 12 years. So what? That doesn't automatically mean it's going to be good.

Then, the advertisements were underwhelming. One of the trailers or commercials gives the run down of the plot.

- guy is inserted into enemy territory
- guy makes friends with the enemy
- guy becomes the enemy

Super simple. But, as often said "it's not the story, it's how you tell it".

Well, I don't entirely agree with that. Sometimes you have to completely disregard the story and enjoy a movie for its other attributes. Sometimes you have to disregard everything except the story.

In Avatar, you don't have to disregard anything. There is a lot more going on than the 3 bullet plot. There are a lot of characters, little subplots, and plenty of amazing visual effects. Its gorgeous, exciting, and entertaining.

The only part in all of the 3 hours that I could've done without is the religious chanting in an effort to save a life. For some reason, it was awkward.
