Good movie about friendship
|
The commercials give you a pretty good idea of what this is about. Peter is getting married. While discussing the marriage, it becomes apparent that he doesn't have any friends. He's always focused on the girl friends. He doesn't have a best man or a groomsman party. He hears his fiancee and her friends discussing that, and he sets out to make a best friend.
His gay brother attempts to set him up on a man date, but that doesn't go well. Neither does his non-gay date with Thomas Lennon, which turns out pretty gay despite his wife and kids. Apparently they had different expectations about the dinner.
Just when Peter was ready to give up, he meets Sydney at an open house that Peter is hosting. Sydney has no intentions of buying the house, and declares such; he's just there to meet divorced women.
They hit it off and start hanging out. Peter keeps saying and doing really uncomfortable things, like they're dating. Sydney just rolls with it.
At the engagement party, Sydney makes a speech wit a lot of innuendo that, unbeknownst to him, was actually pretty blatant. This puts a little strain on the couple. Then, Sydney asks for some money for an investment opportunity.
This is where the movie could've followed some established patterns, but chose not to. Sydney could've turned out to be a big problem; peter and the girlfriend could've come to realize that they're not good for each other and break up. And, it crossed my mind more than once that maybe it would turn out that Peter was Gay, and needed Sydney to discover that about himself.
But, none of that happened. Peter and Sydney briefly broke up and split their things, but they're good friends. Peter and his girlfriend had a bad day or two, but they didn't split up. They really are in love. And, Sydney's investment opportunity really was an investment opportunity for Peter's benefit... and it paid off.
There aren't any bad guys in this movie. Its a movie about friends. I love how everyone comes together at the wedding towards the end; the groomsman party is a riot.
This movie failed to reach greatness. There were a lot of oral sex jokes that weren't funny enough to bring the movie to greatness. In fact, they may have hurt it. There is plenty of other material they could've used to make it more family friendly and maybe funnier. (Don't misunderstand... I'm not a prude. I have no problem with R rated humor. In this case, though, I just don't think it worked.)
In the end, I really enjoyed it. Its funny, and its not typical. Its a funny movie about a couple of new friends, and a bunch of side characters.
