She's the anti-disney in this one; nudity, cursing, language... it's as if she stood on a soap box and said "I am a princess no more! Look at my nakedness!"

I was really close to shutting off Havoc after 2 minutes. The beginning was really obnoxious with all of the gangsta' talk. It stayed obnoxious through the whole movie, but fortunately more material came into play.

Anne plays a rich girl. She and her friends get their jollies by getting involved with a gang. They get in a bit over their heads.

The movie is dedicated to Jessica Kaplan. Some quick research revealed that she wrote the story, then died in a plane crash at the age of 24. Sad.

I was looking forward to that line again, but either I didn't recognize it because it was no longer funny, or I wasn't paying attention.

Anyway, it's ok. Jamie Foxx is kind of funny, but it gets old and he misses more than he hits. Aside from the humor, it's a decent movie with a decent plot.

This is an ANTONINE FUQUA movie, which meant nothing to me at the time. But, since Training Day, it has meant something. What a great movie preceeded and followed by a bunch of crappy or mediocre movies.

I quite liked TEARS OF THE SUN, but apparently I'm the minority there. Some friends recently bashed me for liking it.

I've heard that his newest, BROOKLYN'S FINEST, is very good. Let's see if that holds up.

SHOOTER is garbage.

I almost posted something on facebook to that affect, but then thought I better hold off incase it took a nose dive.

But it didn't. It's a really good action movie about underground fighting.

Michael Jai White is the lead character. When he is released from prison, he gets a room a a half-way house. He then gets himself involved with the underground fighting circuit and starts to work his way up the ranks. He has an agenda, but you don't know what it is (unless you read the NETFLIX description) until later in the movie.

It's atypical of a fight movie. He doesn't have to overcome insurmountable odds. He doesn't have to learn any special moves, or find an old kung-fu master, or having a training montage. In the heat of battle, he doesn't have inspirational flashbacks. He simply destroys everything in his path.

Even in the climatic finale, where he meets and fights the top dog, it's not a big challenge. It's more of a challenge than other fights, but nothing out of his league. He spends a few minutes sizing the guy up, and then starts to take him apart piece by piece. The only thing different about this fight from the others is that it took longer, but it was never in question.

I really enjoyed many little things. In the fore-mentioned big fight, they face off. Michael fakes a move towards the bad guy. The bad guy flinches. The bad guy then fakes a move towards Michael. Michael was a statue. Didn't fall for it.

The plot isn't rocket science, but is sufficient. The fights are excellent, and the bad guy (not the fighting bad guy, the evil bastard bad guy) is sufficiently evil.

The fights are simply amazing. I'm not sure why I'm giving it a 4 instead of a 5. There's something preventing it, just can't put my finger on it. But, I loved it. It has high rewatch value.

<a10:updated>2010-03-08T17:45:16-05:00</a10:updated>

Fame (1980)

Rating: 3<br>I don't have any nostalgia to fall back on<br><br>I thought FAME was ok. It didn't really do much for me. I see that the red-head kid moved on to become Jack Bauer's evil brother in 24. I didn't look around much more than that.

It's probably a better movie than I give it credit for, it's just not my type of movie. The well known song from it is only played, briefly, during a ridiculous scene in which everyone comes running out of the building and starts dancing.

I kept waiting for the famous dance scene with the girl, I think, dancing around a chair. When the movie ended and that scene never happened, I realized I was thinking of the wrong movie. Apparently that one is FLASH DANCE, which I haven't seen either.

Maybe if I saw FAME as a kid and loved it, that would give it some kudos here, but I don't have that to fall back on.

The acting is awful.

A bunch of high school kids go on an overnight field trip to an island to read up on film. You have the usual mix of people; jocks, hotties, exchange students, librarian type, flamboyant gay guy that dishes with the ladies... the usual suspects.

Then people start dying.

It's one of those hack and slash movies, just not a very good one. It's like a crappy version of Scream. The movie even makes fun of itself.

But, that's not to say it's a complete waste of time. It got better as it went on to the point where it was almost entertaining. The couple that owned the house on the island was pretty funny. Every time someone dies, they say "not fair" in their dying breath. That's kind of amusing.

If I had a camcorder and made this movie, I'd be proud of it. If I worked for a movie studio and they gave me money to make this movie, then I would not be proud of it.

Good for some chuckles, but you'd be better of watching Scream.

<a10:updated>2010-03-05T04:02:43-05:00</a10:updated>

Fight Night

Rating: 4<br>All over the place<br><br>According to IMDB, the name of this movie is RIGGED. According to NET FLIX, it's FIGHT NIGHT. Now that I think about it... I didn't even notice what the DVD MENU said.

This is a movie about a scummy promoter of an underground fighting circuit. He's not as scummy as some of the other scum, but he's not a good guy. He fixes (or "rigs") some of the fights for his own personal gang.

One evening, as he's getting beat up again, he is saved by a girl fighter. She wrecks a guy that's 3 times her size. The guy thinks "hey, I can make some money off her".

After some convincing, they go into business together, and she pretty much unbeatable. She ends up losing one fight under peculiar circumstances. It culminates with the ultimate showdown.

I considered giving this movie a 4 because, especially towards the end, it's all over the place. Things don't go the way that I thought they were going to go. Parts of it are rough. There's a great scene with the girl returning to see her parents that's completely messed up.

Heck, I'm giving it a 4. I just talked myself into it.

For the most part, the fighting is believable. She is fast, and she hits hard. She doesn't block a lot. The potential unbelievability isn't due to man vs woman, but it's about those men against that woman. These are big guys, and she is not. When it comes to contact, it's simple physics, so they avoid contact. But, sometimes she does get hit and she recovers, which was unlikely. Some of the blocks were against punches that she wouldn't have been able to block. And, finally, there was one scene where I kept noticing her pulling her arm way back before swinging, and landing the punch anyway. It's as if she said "Ok, i'm winding up to belt you in the jaw! Are your ready? Are you ready? Almost there! Here it comes! Letting it loose" "Ok, go ahead! Hit me!".

I don't.<br><br>BLACK DYANMITE is a 1970s black exploitation movie that was shot in 2008. I never pictured Michael Jai White as a comedic lead, although I think it's an ongoing crying shame that he's not the highest paid action star in hollywood. He does the comedy well.

BLACK DYNAMITE is the lead character's name. When they flashback to his child hood, even his mother calls him Black Dynamite.

Pretty much every scene in this movie pays homage to some other movie. But, I never saw any of those movies so could in no way appreciate that level of humor. But, I didn't need to. This is a great movie even if you don't have a Phd in film history. I laughed a lot, and I think it's one of those movies that will get funnier on each viewing.

There's one guy in there that I briefly mistook for Wesley Snipes. Then, the commentary revealed the guy is Wesley's stunt double. There are a lot of cameo appearances of people I don't know, and some that I do. Arsenio Hall is in it, and I didn't recognize him. I recognized the guy from RENO 911, but I don't remember his name.... oh, wait, maybe I do... Cedric Yarborough?

The movie is ridiculous. Mistakes that were made during filming are kept in there, and if you didn't know (via the commentary) it was a blooper, you'd think it's funny anyway.

The trailer shows Black Dynamite being super cool under all circumstances. "What about the smile?" "I am smiling". For the most part, he is, but he does digress a couple times.

The funniest scene in the movie is about one of the most absurd things I've ever seen in my life. I won't give any details, but when they finally put together what is going on and why... it's completely out of control and how they get from point A to point B is legendary dialog.

Highly recommended.

Therapist? Psychologist? Not sure, exactly, but she has two Master degrees and Phd, so she's a professor of something-or-other.

She's been living the cozy life with all her schooling and swell pieces of paper. But, she hasn't really been into the fire yet. Fortunately for her, a plane crashes killing most of the passengers, and she's given the task of counseling the survivors.

In her talks, she hears inconsistencies in accounts of what happens, and she starts to think that there's a conspiracy. Maybe the crash didn't happen the way the air line said it happened.

** SPOILERS **

This is a good movie. I advise you to not read this until you see the movie.

You can definitely tell that something is off through the whole thing. The trick is to figure out what. I thought I had it figured out, and I was in the right ballpark, but not exactly. (That doesn't mean the movie is genius, only that I am not). The last few minutes of the movie are very excellent. I was riding the wave of the end and was about to give this movie a 4, but then I remembered that the rest of the movie wasn't as good.

They didn't try to get to fancy with this. They could've done things to lead you to think that she was just insane, not haunted, but they didn't bother. It's a ghost movie. There's a ghost. Of course, when she tries to report the ghost problem, she's met with disbelief.

But, in my opinion, the production value is very high although it still seems like a low budget film.

This is a movie about a group of enemy soldiers that get stuck behind enemy lines. They come across a British chap that has a book full of intelligence goodies that simply must make it into allied hands. But, the chap, being British, has complicated the problem by assuring that the only one who can red said goodies is himself.

A secondary story line establishes that, gee wiz, the german soldiers just aren't that bad. Sure, that Hitler guy is a jerk, but a lot of the soldiers are just people serving their country.

Kudos. Good flick, especially if it's as low-budget as I think it is.

It turns out that a cult lives on the grounds on which our heroes wish to engage in paint-ball related tomfoolery, and as luck would have it, the cult isn't the nice type that kills themselves. No. They kill others.

At first, I was afraid this was going to be one of those gory torture movies. It's not. It's violent, but it's not too bad. The opening credits gave me the impression that it was going to be disturbing.

At the beginning, I wasn't excessively impressed with the fights. It was a lot of strike-block-counter-strike. It was one thing after the other rather than a bunch of things happening at once. As the movie gets more insane, that goes away.

I haven't seen ONG BAK in a long time, and I think I might be confusing it with THE PROTECTOR. If memory serves, though, ONG BAK 2 is more serious. It's all business.

Ong Bak 2 is purchase worthy, but 3 comes out this year. I'll wait for the triple pack.

Very similar to The Mask of Zorro.

I didn't have fond memories about this movie, and was surprised to see that I gave it a 4. I think that was probably an accident.

It's a watchable movie, but not much more. Luis Guzman's man-crush is silly. Most of it's pretty tame and disneyish. It could've been a really great movie, but ends up being the Cristo version of the Three Musketeers. (Well, not that bad.)

This is an artsy-fartsy-not-a-love-story. It's one of those quaint independent films with lots of interesting cinematography and funny editting. Its quirky and thoroughly entertaining.

This movie covers 500 days of a guy's relationship with a woman named summer. Why is the 500 in parentheses? I don't know.

The movie bounces back and forth through out the days. Each time it jumps to a different day, the number scrolls up or down. We see the positive and negative extremes of how the relationship affects the guy.

The funniest scene is when they were playing house at IKEA.

Great flick. The director of this, Marc Webb, is moving on to bigger things. He's the director of the new spiderman movie.

John Cena is a cop who finds himself in the crosshair of a criminal mastermind. The criminal master mind seeks vengeance for the death of his girlfriend.

So, what better way to seek vengeance than to have John run around the city solving goofly little puzzles and saving lives?

If you're thinking "kind of like DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE" then I think "yes you are correct". It's pretty much the same script.

Not fun. Not entertaining. The only redeeming values is the presence of the esteemed Ashley Scott. In my opinion, should be in every movie ever made.

Oh, by the way. John's actual character name is DANNY. I usually don't remember character names, but they said it about a thousand times, so it's hard to forget. I think they just said "Danny" a lot of instead of writing dialog.
