<a href='http://www.dvdfriend.us/Read.aspx?bid=f249237f-f1c6-4490-bfb4-36e7e7298fec'>Jay's Karate Kid Review</a>

Naturally, I had a lot of curiosity in the remake. The new one should have been called KUNG-FU KID, not KARATE. I guess they had to keep the name to capitalize on the predecessor.

My primary concern about The Karate Kid isn't that it's a remake of my favorite movie. No, my concern was that it's star is 10 years old. I don't care that Daniel was 17 and Drey is 10, I just care that Drey is 10. Who wants to see little kids get beat on? I really liked the movie "NEVER BACK DOWN" which was a bunch of 30 year old playing high school students, but even then, I didn't like the idea of underground fight clubs for high school kids. Grade school kids are even worse.

There are many parallels between the old and new, but its definitely not a copy.

The new movie is fun. The sites are beautiful, Drey is occasionally funny and occasionally obnoxious, and the fights are good. I don't think Jackie Chan is particularly remarkable. From an action stand point, that's ok, he's an instructor. From a relationship stand point, he didn't offer anything. Nothing that I bought, anyway.

Before comparing it to the first: The new Karate Kid is a good movie by itself, for the reasons already stated.

But, compared to the first, it's lacking. Drey and Han never develop the relationship that Daniel and My. Miyagi did. I was thinking about that exact point while watching the new movie when suddenly Drey stated "You're the best friend I ever had". And I thought "why"? They didn't seem like buddies to me, just a teacher and a student. I think it failed on that level. More time was spent establishing the pre-tween relationship with the little girl than with the Han, the character that should've been the essence of the movie.

They skipped the wax-on and wax-off routine (but did pay homage to it) in lieu of Jacket-on and Jacket-off. After a few days of doing that, all of sudden Drey was a defense expert. It was really cool to watch, but very unbelievable.

SPOILERS

There wasn't a crane kick, there was a cobra kick. The cobra kick was cool because you did't know what was coming. Han didn't teach it to him, and Han was just as surprised as everyone else when he did it. That's great stuff. Where it suffers, though, is that it was such a tremendous kick that I was left to wonder how the heck he managed to pull it off on his first try without any training. It involved some serious acrobatics. Again, unbelievable, but cool.

This is about a cop named Mel Gibson. He's a Boston cop working in Boston, so they spend a lot of time on the accent. Having lived in Boston for 27 years, it didn't sound to boston'esqe to me, but what do I know?

Anyhoo... his daughter comes home and gets killed, and that rubs Mel the wrong way. He doesn't go on a rampage, though. This isn't Taken. He sets about figuring things out, and makes friends with a hit man. The two are adorable together.

He does shed some blood towards the end. It gets a little juicy.

The conspiracy that caused all the ruckus was larger in scope than what the movie could successfully portray. The movie felt small, and the conspiracy should've been smaller.

There's one dumb scene. Mel gets kidnapped. Then he escapes. I'm not sure what the point was, although I may have zoned out and missed it.

<a10:updated>2010-07-01T01:59:19-04:00</a10:updated>

Twilight: Eclipse

Rating: 4<br>The 13 year old girl in me liked it.<br><br>I've seen more than one review stating that it's the best of the series so far. I don't know... I still like the first one the best. The first one didn't blow me away, but I remember thinking about it and not really being able to fault it for anything. I thought it was an excellent movie.

I really liked the second one, too, though there certainly are things to pick on. I think Jacob should put on a shirt and focus some of his energy on acting lessons rather than the Ab Lounge. I've seen New Moon twice, and I find most of the scenes with he and Bella to be awkward.

Eclipse is about the same, but it has more excellent moments.

When the movie started, I didn't realize it had started. I thought the entire first scene was an excellent trailer for some other movie. Then I figured out it was part of the movie. Whoops. The chase scene in the forest, and most all of the action scenes, were successful.

I like them all. Yes, I'm a 13 year old girl inside. I wonder if I would like them had I not read the books. I wonder if that's biasing me.

I have a lot to say about the books, but have done that already, but I'll spare you. Mostly. Breaking Moon was excessively long, boring, and anti-climatic. Furthermore, it was done in a different style of the first 3. It broke the continuity and felt like a book from another series. (I might be exaggerating on that last point, but not excessively).

Tom Cruise plays a silly version of his Mission Impossible character. Cameron Diaz plays a bubble head (nothing new there) who gets caught up with Tom's shenanigans.

It's pretty funny and entertaining, but not so much as to make it a very good movie... just passable. I like the chemistry between the characters. They polluted that with a plot attempt.

There are two scenes worth of mention:

Tom Cruise does a motorcycle stunt. It's funny because you don't see the stunt; just how it starts and how it ends. You see the motorcycle hit a ramp, then the bike's flying through the air with a passenger, and crashes into the water. Then you see a helmet fall on the hood, then you hear a big thud as he lands on the roof. You have to fill in the blanks. Cool scene.

The other scene that is worthy of mention is the scene that they stole (or accidentally copied) from MY NAME IS EARL, if you can believe it. Towards the end of the series, we start to learn the origins of DARNELL THE CRAB MAN. He's on a mission to clear his name, or something similar, and Earl comes along for the rid. But, Darnell keeps drugging him. So, the only bits you see are the bits where Earl starts to wake up until he's drugged again. Each time this happens, he's in a completely different bizarre situation. Knight and Day did the same thing. Twice.

I came across RAMPAGE on Netflix on Demand and fired it up. I saw it was a UWE BOLL film and was looking forward to a complete piece of crap.

In another review somewhere, I recall defending the Uew Boll atrocities. The guy gets absolutely no respect, and he keeps financing movies and making them anyway. Somehow, he gets big name actors. The guy must really love movies; my naive intuition leads me the believe he is the ultimate fanboy.

If I recall a story correctly, he challenged people to shut up and help improve a movie rather than bash it, and no one took him up on it. I'd take him up on it without hesitation, if only I mattered.

Enough of that.

I was completely enthralled with Rampage like few movies have ever enthralled me. It's very intense and very well done.

When I rate crappy movies, I rate them as crappy movies. Last week I saw 2 crappy movies and gave them both 4s because they were great crappy movies. The numbers are relative to what they are.

RAMPAGE isn't an excellent crappy movie. It's an excellent movie, without any qualifiers. I sat there and stared at it, with unwaiving commitment, for 85 minutes.

Did you see United 93? Tense, right? It's a tense movie about a very disturbing subject matter. When it was over, I clapped. A guy asked me why I was clapping. I asked him why he wasn't. I was clapping because it was a good movie, and the heroism at the end. I assume he didn't clap because a lot of poeple died in a terrorist attach. It all depends how you look at it.

Rampage is similar. It's not a good subject matter. It's not something you root for. The potential reality of it is horrifying. It's completely messed up, and unlike United 93, there isn't a hero to clap for no matter how you look at it.

But, Snoopy as my witness, I couldn't take my eyes off it. I'm very rarely fixated on anything I watch.

It was completely awful.

Otherwise, I enjoyed the entire season. I didn't think it was too slow in the first half, which I just read is a common complaint. I thought the military people were too whiny for military people, but I got over it.

I like the serious approach to the show. It's definitely influenced by BSG in that BSG proved that people like serious sci-fi.

Chris has raised the issue "where did the couch and lamp come from?". Good point. I'm not going to ponder it.

I eagerly await season 2.

I thought I got the gist of it from the trailer, and it would be a great popcorn movie. I was really looking forward to it.

There was never a possibility that I wouldn't see this movie. But, the line that really sold it in the trailer is "They specialize in the ridiculous".

The characters are a riot. There are too many solemn glances at the beginning as characters meet and realize that they're all rangers. That didn't work well. Face is a riot, right from the beginning. Both bad guys are hysterical. My favorite scene takes place in the back seat of a car with a bureaucrat who is trying to put a silencer on a gun. The whole scene is killer funny. Both Lynch and Pike are awesome.

All of the A-Team guys are great, too, in their own ways. If anything negative is to be said, it's that Hannibal is a caricature of the 1980's Hannibal. (I remember reading a line many months ago on another site. Something like "Liam Neeson looks like he's dressing up as Hannibal for halloween". That's pretty accurate.

The rest is completely ridiculous, which I'm ok with in principle but apparently not in execution. They use 8 air bags to float a cargo container. Most of the "plans" are based on luck and good timing. The 3D scene was lame. The tank scene went too far.

So where is the line? How can I say that I'm ok with it being ridiculous but not too ridiculous? I don't know; it's just my opinion. As much as I enjoyed the characters, this isn't the A-Team movie I would've liked to see.

Bring on #2. I'll be there.

<a10:updated>2010-06-15T20:43:56-04:00</a10:updated>

Stonehenge Apocalypse

Rating: 4<br>At last, they mystery of Stonehenge has been solved.<br><br>So, it turns out that there are a bunch of natural energy conduits around the globe. It's a doomsday movie. This time, doomsday is prompted by a network of atom colliders that go boom, one-by-one, taking big cities along with them.

Make no mistake: it's junk. But it's good junk. I enjoyed it quite a bit, especially the end.

You'll probably never watch this movie, so I shouldn't be concerned about spoiling it. But I am. There's more going on than you originally think. I can tell you what other movies it reminds me of, but then that would corrupt your pristine viewing experience (if you were to ever have one).

<a10:updated>2010-06-07T04:18:21-04:00</a10:updated>

Tell-Tale

Rating: 3<br>Not an original idea, but good telling of it<br><br>TELL-TALE is based on an EDGAR ALLEN POE book called THE TELL-TALE HEART. Do you see the similarities in the name? The similarities are subtle, but they're there.

I was going to say that Aaron Eakhard had a bad heart. Then I figured I better verify the spelling of his last name. Then I saw he wasn't in it; it was Josh Lucas. Whoops.

Josh Lucas had a bad heart, so they went ahead and gave him someone else's. That someone else was a bad dude, and the spirit of the bad dude lingers. Aaron... I mean Josh, finds himself killing people that wronged his heart's previous owner. He doesn't want to kill them, but heck, the heart wants what the heart wants.

It's pretty decent. There aren't really any major twists, but there's a fun little gotcha at the end that I enjoyed.

UPDATE: I just found why I thought it was AARON. He was in Suspect Zero, which I watched right before this (a few days ago). Just got my stars crossed.

Woody Harrelson is the commanding officer. Ben Foster is the new guy on the job. There a team. Ben has no interest in the job at all, and Woody knows that, but a job is a job.

Woody is a recovering alcoholic. That comes up a lot. Ben took a hit in Iraq, and has some issues himself. They're a destructive combo.

It's a cool movie. It gives some insight into what these guys have to do, and how they're supposed to stay separated from it all. Lot's of drama.

Of all the dramatic goodness, though, my favorite part is much simpler and less significant. If one were to a psychoanalysis of my reviews, you may find that there are certain things that I like that always score points with me. In fact, you don't even need a psychology degree to come to that conclusion because I come right out and say it from time to time, though perhaps not directly as this. I like the buddy moments. I like it when one person can count on another person, and that other person is there without question. I liked the movie "The Losers", but I didn't like that one of group became a traitor. I kept thinking "it's a trick! it's a trick!". But, it wasn't a trick, and I was disappointed.

THE MESSENGER has a great buddy moment. The two guys are out fishing, and they get buzzed by some clowns on jet ski's. Woody let's the expletives fly. He's been drinking, so isn't 100% in charge of his faculties. Ben doesn't really care.

They get off the boat and having a bit of a disagreement. They are friends, but not getting along just great at the moment. The three guys from the jet ski's approach and they're ready to rumble.

Woody stands up and says "Lock and Load, Sergeant".
Ben responds, "Yes Sir", no hesitation. He could've said "You know what, you're being kind of a jerk and I'm not sure that this is really something that I want to get into right now, so I'll wait for you in the car.".

They don't show the fight, just an insult before the fight. It cuts to them driving, all beat up, and talking about something else altogether.

Good stuff.

Ben Foster looked familiar to me, and I figured out he was in 3:10 TO YUMA; he was great in that. I checked IMDB. I saw a lot of his movies, but never noticed him in the crowd.

Howell likes to make his own version of other movies. He created a WAR OF THE WORLDS movie, and a sequel, that weren't watchable. Just awful.

When THE DAY THE EARTH STOPPED started, and it said "A Thomas C. Howell Movie", I grimaced. I could've stopped it, but didn't.

This one is a blatant copy of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. All the important bits are the same. The alien is a hot chic. GORT has been replaced by a pretty cool looking robot. It could've been Robototech's SDF in robot configuration.

This is, without a question, a B movie, but a decent one. I sort of enjoyed it.

The two flaws that bubble to the top:
Thomas C. Howell is probably around 50. He plays what appears to be a private in the army at the beginning of the movie. He has the baseball cap on, tilted back on his head, like he just signed up a couple weeks ago. He's kind of ignorant about things that are going on. That was a mismatch.

The second one is the birth of the child. The child came out weighing about 20 pounds and as clean as a whistle. We have a newborn; she weighs 7 pounds. I can hardly put her on my shoulder. This movie's newborn was sitting on his arm.

Don't rush out to rent it, but if you like crappy sci-fi, it's a good one.

<a10:updated>2010-06-06T04:10:55-04:00</a10:updated>

Lookout, The

Rating: 5<br>Didn't see this one coming<br><br>What a great movie. THE LOOKOUT is about a guy named Chris who has suffered a head trauma. He's no longer completely right in the head. He forgets things, and is physically and mentally limited.

4 years after the accident, he gets a job at a bank as a custodian. It's a bank. He's vulnerable. Let's home that no one wants to rob it.

The movie both starts and ends very strong. There's a brief period, around the heist, where it wanes a little bit. And, at the end, it started to feel a bit too much like Memento. But, those are minor violations. This is a great movie all around. Excellent acting, characters, and story.

James Stewart plays Charles Lindberg, the first guy to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. The main story line of the movie is the actual flight, but with flash backs of his life and how he got to where he is.

There's a lot of conversation and character development, and I learned a lot (assuming that any of it is accurate).

The first episode is epic. Season 1 is excellent.

After that, it's always pretty good. Many times in 6 years, people have tried to talk to me about Lost, but I never engaged. Yes, it's confusing. Yes, there's a lot going on. But, really, I just don't care that much. I'll just keep watching it and see how it pans out. I never developed any theories or spent any time exploring the hundreds of websites that delve into every nook and cranny. Ok, so there was a polar bear. Cool. That was season 1, and we're still talking about it.

Also, my attention was never 100% on the show. I'm usually working on the laptop when we watch tv, so I never fully appreciate what's on. Lost, which probably requires the most attention, didn't get any more than any other show. But I still enjoyed it.

In my opinion, the last season was excellent, and the finale was perfect. It was cinematic, touching, moving, etc. As far as I'm concerned, it's one of the greatest tv show endings that I've seen. Maybe the greatest... I can't really think of any others, so I guess it wins, at least for now.

When it ended, though, I was overcome with a sense of "What?", and went to bed. True story follows... I kept waking up and thinking about it, and falling back asleep. I very rarely sleep well, but I usually wake up thinking about code, then falling asleep. (Yes, I'm a super geek. Most of my thoughts are code oriented even when I'm thinking about things that have nothing to do with code. "if (jay == hungry) { Eat(); }") By the time I woke up, I was perfectly happy with the ending. It's not so much that I figured it out, but I came to understand it. In my opinion, there wasn't anything to figure out. They told us exactly what was going on, I just had to process it.

My lasting feeling of it, for the last 24 hours, has been "wow". Words don't do it justice. It was intense, surreal, cinematic... insert more adjectives.

When I woke up this morning and checked face book ( Wakeup(); Pee(); CheckFacebook(); }, some of our friends were talking about it. I responded to simply say that "I get it". She then asked for my explanation. I responded privately because I have avoided deep trivial lost conversations for 6 years, and didn't want to start at the last episode. If I made public comments, I would've been open for correction, and I really didn't want to get into it.

So, I stated my case as succinctly as I could. As the day progressed, it appeared that the masses agreed with me. Most people have a much deeper understanding of it than I did, and went into a lot greater detail. But, what I had was correct (or everyone is wrong), and was enough for my own personal satisfaction.

But, I kept thinking of HAVOC and how it was terrible in the beginning but ended up being pretty good. So, I kept turning it back on.

It's a movie about a porn star, her sick dad, and her friends. We're meant to see the person behind the porn star.

The porn star does a favor for a friend and seduces the friend's soon-to-be ex-fiancee. That leads her to think she can be an entrepreneur and seeks out similar gigs. One of them gets her into trouble, which causes her to reevaluate her life.

By the end, it wasn't awful, but I've never shut a movie off twice before.

It's about a guy who is dumped by a girl. One thing leads to another, and he ends up working at a grocery store where he meets another girl. He works for a crazy man, and works with crazy people.

The guy is an artist. He can stare at stupid things, just like the kid in American Beauty. But, he'll actually imagine suspending time to appreciate the things.

It's really funny in a subtle way. Its quirky, and fun. It's a good find, and the best recommendation I can make of the last many movies I can make.

The one thing it has going for it is the "pay it forward" ending.

<a10:updated>2010-05-20T17:49:29-04:00</a10:updated>

District 13: Ultimatum

Rating: 2<br>It's a shame<br><br>District B13 was great. It was exciting, had some great fight scenes, and was entertaining from start to finish.

The follow-up is a big let down. First of all, they lost the B in the movie's title, which continues to baffle me. They show B13 in the movie all over the place.... oh, wait... I think I just figured it out. District 13 contains ABCDE, which are the 5 different gangs. The first movie only focused on B. The second movie employs them all. Ah... ok. I feel better now. I can cross that off the complaint list.

The dubbing is very bad, which may have hurt the movie. Maybe it would be better if the dub-acting was better. As-is, though, it's distracting and causes involuntary groaning and head shaking.

Some of the stunts were cool, and some of the fights were pretty good, but it was rarely exciting. I was waiting for it to end almost from the beginning.

It's too bad, but so is the usual course of sequels.

Quite the opposite. <br><br>I gave the original IRON MAN a 4. If I wasn't so lazy, I would go change it to a 5. I'm not a comic book guy. I don't always appreciate things immediately. IRON MAN, like any movie, has some flaws, but it's extremely enjoyable and has very-high rewatch value. I just didn't fully appreciate it on the first viewing.

IRON MAN 2 is excellent. I know a lot of people didn't like it as much as the first. I don't know if they don't know the reason for that... are they looking it as a movie, or as the comic book? Did it violate some comic book legacy that resulted in negative feedback, or do they just not think it's a great movie regardless?

I really liked Spider-Man 3. It's my favorite of the series. I know I'm the minority there; usually when I see something about Spider-Man 3, it's negative. While I agree the basic elements of it have been done a million times before, I think they did it very well. I love how they wrapped everything up just in time for the reboot.

Iron Man 2 feels like Spider Man 3 to me. Friends fight then resolve their differences for the ultimate show down. It's not too convoluted; there's only one bad guy and his benefactor. And, the bad guy is well done.

The one obvious thing that Iron Man 2 lost, for the most part, was the charisma. In the first one, Tony was a funny charismatic guy. In the second one he's saying "look how funny and charismatic I am", but really he was just loud and obnoxious.

The scene in the donut shop with Nick Fury felt a little off somehow. I can't put my finger on it, but it didn't feel right.

At the very end, when they finally get to fighting the bad guy, I was almost getting sick of it; it was time to end. Fortunately, they kept the final confrontation quick.

I really enjoyed Iron Man 2. I think it's an honor to its predecessor.

<a10:updated>2010-05-17T14:04:15-04:00</a10:updated>

Imaginarum of Dr Parnassus

Rating: 4<br>With Heath Ledger passing away before finishing film, they did an amazing job finishing this film with what they had. <br><br>

<a10:updated>2010-05-17T11:22:50-04:00</a10:updated>

Wes Craven's A New Nightmare

Rating: 3<br>Interesting Concept at its time, but for a slasher, more people should of paid the piper. <br><br>

<a10:updated>2010-05-17T11:22:00-04:00</a10:updated>

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Rating: 4<br>The original still holds up as a classic in true horror. <br><br>

<a10:updated>2010-05-15T13:48:39-04:00</a10:updated>

Brothers

Rating: 4<br>Grim outlook on the life of a soldier brought back from Afghanstan <br><br>

<a10:updated>2010-05-11T12:56:32-04:00</a10:updated>
