Have to agree the end was a bit bizarre but none-the-less a very good movie in my book.

There's a lot to it. I'll probably watch it again with the director's commentary; there are 2 on the blu-ray.

PAN'S LABRYNTH is the story of a girl in a bad situation. She has an over active imagination to compensate for it. The movie covers here fantasy land, a lot of which is bizarre. Two of the scenes (frog and eye monster) are completely freaky. Meanwhile, in the real world, her sick mother is pregnant with a baby boy fathered by a sadistic Spanish captain. The captain is a hard-core bad guy. The war is over, and he's trying to clean up the remainders of the resistance.

Everyone's acting is phenomena. Pan's Labrynth is a work of freaky art.

The two students have been working on a screenplay for 3 years, and are looking forward to filming it as their final project. But, they learn that the final project can only be 2 minutes long.

A female friend of their's, who you know that one of them will end up with, inspires them to make the film anyway. The only studio they're able to work with is an adult film studio. So, they rewrite their screen play to be an adult film. But, the writer wants it to be an adult film that people want to watch until the end.

The rest of the movie is about them making the movie in their parent's house, without getting caught.

Most of it is excellent. And, despite how the subject may sound, it was mostly done with class. There isn't any nudity; all the dirty parts, except for one, are just suggested. The one dirty part was completely out of left field and, in my opinion, corrupts the movie.

The only other thing it loses points on is some of the jokes at the end. They named a couple of porn movies with names that parody real movies. But, the real movies are all pretty old. They weren't clever or current.

For the most part, this is a really great and entertaining film.

<a10:updated>2010-01-15T19:53:31-05:00</a10:updated>

Fired Up

Rating: 3
A mixed bag

This is another movie about a bunch of 30 year olds playing high school kids.

It's pretty much the same plot as avatar: infiltrate the enemy (cheereleaders/navi) for your own agenda (get cheerleaders/get intel), then become attached to the enemy and ultimately become the enemy. That's the plot of most movies, they just swap out some of the elephants.

I laughed a lot during FIRED UP, but some of it was charitable. They had a lot of funny ideas, and some of them they pulled off, but I got the sense that no one in this movie should ever be in a movie. The acting was pretty bad, though not much was required. They had all of these little jokes that should've been funnier than they were, but didn't quite pull it off.

I think I missed some stuff too. At one point, the cheerleaders fall to the ground. They help each other up. I noticed that one of the girls was kneeling behind one of her teammates, lost in the moment as she massaged her but and rubbed her facial cheek to the other's but cheek. Then she realized what she was doing and stood up. But, that wasn't the focus of the shot; that was happening in the background. Now I'm wondering if that was going on through the whole thing, and I wasn't paying close enough attention. The bloopers/cut scenes at the end show more of that.

There was another gag that I really liked. You know when you watch a movie, and there's a big revelation, and then it does flashbacks from the movie showing you all the hints that you should've used to figure everything out, but you were too dumb too? FIRED UP does that too, but they flash back to a bunch of scenes that they never showed you before. They showed you stuff around the important bit, but not the important bit itself. Pretty funny.

Even without the power of BLU-RAY, it looks amazing.

Up is the story of a man and woman who grow old together. The woman dies, leaving the man to be lonesome and grumpy. When he's about to be forcibly removed from his house, he attaches a bunch of balloons to his house and flies off to South America, bringing an accidental passenger. Adventure ensues.

I liked it, but not in a huge way. I appreciate the animation and the characters, but the story didn't do much for me. The opening scenes were sweet, but that was pretty much the extent of any emotional reaction. It never got too exciting. It was funny enough for some chuckles.

Jack Black and Michael Cera converse as if the year is 2010.

The main characters are all contemporary (to use Ramis's word), but all of the other characters are more suited to the times.

Its kind of funny. I laughed out loud more than once. The actress that played MAYA did a great job. She didn't have a huge role, but made it count.

The documentary was pretty good, for the most part. It's a "making-of" documentary focusing a lot on each of the actors bestowing worship upon the other actors; pretty typical. The distracting thing about the documentary was the segments about the costume design. This is not a serious, epic, or significant movie. It's just mildly amusing. Focusing on the artistic details of the costumes and how they relate to the background palette means nothing.

<a10:updated>2010-01-15T14:39:53-05:00</a10:updated>

God of War

Rating: 4
This game was considered one of the best ps2 games of all time, now updated for ps3 its not hard to see why.

<a10:updated>2010-01-12T14:24:46-05:00</a10:updated>

Year One

Rating: 3
Had some funny parts, decent but nothing ground breaking in the humor genre.

<a10:updated>2010-01-10T02:04:15-05:00</a10:updated>

Avatar: "Dances with Wolves in SPAAAAAACCCCEE!!!!"

Rating: 5
Amazing, but lets focus on the negative in this spoilerrific review

Ok so most of us, minus some certain unnamed upper management, thought Avatar was a fantastic film, which I agree with in everything positive said about it, however I feel there was some negative aspects to the film that must go mentioned, just so we can truly better understand the social and political impact this film will have.

First and foremost lets talk about the strongest focus of the entire movie and that was Nationalism(or the lack thereof). The main character of the movie is Jake Sully a Marine, a soldier trained in the art of death, yet the discipline and patriotism only few can obtain. He comes to this planet of Pandora in order to aid the military effort(corporate controlled) retrieval of a unobtainium(really not important because they did not really tell u what this stuff does).

What bothers me(or not really but for sake of devils advocate) is that a Marine is a loyal soldier trained to protect his brothers, yet when comes to meeting a large amazonian alien woman he decides it is ok to go and kill his fellow Marines who are only doing there duty to protect the human race by mining this important mineral for their survival. So isn't he really the murderer, not just a betrayer to his people, but a full blown Navi Terrorist. Yes the political system which is working to obtain this material is flawed, however it does not mean, letting the human race die, when as seen by the end of the movie, the tree was not vital to the survival of the alien race. Plus there aliens....before we came to them, they were constantly coming to our planet, abducting us, probing us and spawning there young inside our stomachs. So Jake Sully, hero or traitor? I say Traitor....sad day for Nationalism.

Another negative thing about this movie is its effects. They are just to damn gorgeous, so gorgeous that it makes the effects of "life" seem bland and uninteresting to exist in anymore. The colors were rich, and the perception was Three dimensions, lacking that pesky fourth dimension, yet giving you more than simple X and Y Axis. The Z axis is beautiful and complete. I went to work today, expecting 3D but was sadly disappointed in my Fourth Dimensional experience, 1 dimension to many....check please...

Lastly......are the alien woman hot? You know this one left me feeling awkward, something I don't like to feel after a movie. Yes there tall, 3 times the size of humans, big boned perhaps? Yet there abs are flat, there rears shapely, but there hair tentacle receptacle strangely enticing. So I am not sure how I feel about the Human/Navi love relationship hat was going on and if i was Jealous of it, or spiteful. Either way....it left me no longer knowing Who I really am and What I want. Is my wife ever going to be Alien enough for me again? sigh, so the struggle of life continues....

<a10:updated>2010-01-08T14:32:13-05:00</a10:updated>

Sum of All Fears, The

Rating: 3
I wanted to like it, but he just didn't feel like the younger version of Harrison or Baldwin

<a10:updated>2010-01-07T21:08:47-05:00</a10:updated>

Hunt for Red October

Rating: 5
No Harrison Ford, but Sean Connery is Harrison Fords dad in Indiana Jones

<a10:updated>2010-01-07T21:08:16-05:00</a10:updated>

Clear and Present Danger

Rating: 5
Favorite Jack Ryan movie ever!!!!!!

<a10:updated>2010-01-07T21:07:50-05:00</a10:updated>

Patriot Games

Rating: 5
Amazing, almost flawless, one tiny step behind Clear and Present Danger

<a10:updated>2010-01-07T21:07:26-05:00</a10:updated>

Patriot Games

Rating: 4
Good Jack Ryan movie

<a10:updated>2010-01-07T03:46:27-05:00</a10:updated>

Paranormal Activity

Rating: 5
I am not a fan of these movies, but for what this was less than 20K , i was scared crapless.

<a10:updated>2010-01-06T15:24:33-05:00</a10:updated>

Stargate, Children of the God's: The Final Cut

Rating: 4
The SG-1 Pilot revisited, with 12 years experience under their belt

<a10:updated>2010-01-05T03:08:05-05:00</a10:updated>

Watchmen: Ultimate Cut

Rating: 5
Improving on Excellence

The ULTIMATE CUT is every bit as good as the original plus some. As far as I can remember, it's mostly the same movie with the DARK FREIGHTER side story now embedded. That cartoon itself, while a tad disgusting, is great. Some of the transitions into it are triggered by the kid at the news stand. Others just get dropped in.

I find WATCHMEN to be totally engrossing. There's so much to it. All of the characters are great. See my original review for more details.

In 1996, I completely hated it. I haven't watched it since.

In 2009, it's not so bad. I definitely got the joke in 1996, but didn't find it funny. Today, I do sort of. I wouldn't rush out to see it again, but nor would I nuke anyone selling it.

It really is a super parody. What I may appreciate more now than I did in 1996 is the characters. Natalie Portman: She is completely bored through the whole thing. She never shows any spark of life. Pierce Brosnan: Portrays 100% confidence and never lets up even though he has no idea what he's talking about. Sarah Jessica Parker: I don't understand why I hate her. She's probably the loveliest person on the planet, but every time she comes on screen I want her to get stepped on by a Godzilla type creature. Jack Nicholson plays 2 roles: a president who's out of his league, and a vegas man who wants to capitalize on the invasion.

There's only one scene that I always remembered liking from my 1996 viewing. The grandmother is at the home listening to a record. The aliens see that she's oblivious, and sneak up behind her with a giant ray gun. It could've probably killed her from a mile away, but they're mischievous little fellas, and they want to get the turret of this huge gun as close to her head as possible. Funny stuff. (That just reminded me of IDIOCRACY. The cops surround a car, and one of the cops fires a rocket at the car from about 2 feet away. Meanwhile, the guy that owns the car is hiding and cheering them on forgetting that it's his car.)

There were a lot of people in the credits. Most of them only had a couple minutes of screen time. Michael J Fox: dead. Jack Black: Dead. That's all I can recall.

Nothing I saw about Avatar prior to its release piqued my interest. Sure, its James Cameron and he hasn't made a movie in 12 years. So what? That doesn't automatically mean it's going to be good.

Then, the advertisements were underwhelming. One of the trailers or commercials gives the run down of the plot.

- guy is inserted into enemy territory
- guy makes friends with the enemy
- guy becomes the enemy

Super simple. But, as often said "it's not the story, it's how you tell it".

Well, I don't entirely agree with that. Sometimes you have to completely disregard the story and enjoy a movie for its other attributes. Sometimes you have to disregard everything except the story.

In Avatar, you don't have to disregard anything. There is a lot more going on than the 3 bullet plot. There are a lot of characters, little subplots, and plenty of amazing visual effects. Its gorgeous, exciting, and entertaining.

The only part in all of the 3 hours that I could've done without is the religious chanting in an effort to save a life. For some reason, it was awkward.
